Yarn, wires & cement

This work is a mediation on our relationship to nature and to each other as immigrants. These plants often identified as weeds, are commonly found throughout the urban landscape in lots and in the cracks of neatly laid concrete slabs. Their invasive resilience and herbal benefits are casually overlooked as we douse them in herbicide, uproot them or walk by as we manage our busy lives.

Another thing we overlook is that they are not native to these parts. Originally from Europe and Eurasia they are remnants of a time when perhaps they were revered enough to take along across an ocean to a new home.

18th street is one of the main arteries in a historically immigrant neighborhood that continues to serve as a haven. Human immigration causes many conflicts, though it should be open to free will. Our ecosystems are different in that they may be permanently altered when we thoughtlessly transplant species.

IMOK-U.S.A.
This was an intervention performed at Antena gallery on June 25, 2010 as part of the Sangre, Sudor, y Papeles. Artists on Immigration Exhibit

Description:
U.S. Immigration policy has been reformed. With millions up in arms over the need for reform and looking for a solution to the explosive crisis, out of the rubble came IMOK. Privatization quickly became the obvious answer to a combination of factors: a recession, wars with no end in sight, fear of a growing bureaucracy in government and desire to profit from an expanding market.

American companies and politicians have opened up to the profitability and market potential of the ever growing mass of immigrants, particularly of Latin American descent. They were all coming to buy the American dream but there was no one selling it to them until now.
*insert evil laugh

---
Voluntary participants can fill out a simple application to participate which will also be the form used for the (office only section) naturalization interview.

The interview consists of a short series (10 total) of naturalization questions. Some questions I have made up for laughs, others, I’ve grabbed from the real application. They are just as absurd. Amongst them are visual cards that require a simple choice of ‘this or that’. The purpose of the IMOK cards is to assure that the applicant understands the American identity. We want to know that our customers can properly assimilate and truly want the American dream.
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/106153/1449183/family.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="488" width_o="1098" height_o="800" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/106153/1449183/family_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/106153/1449183/kids and food.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="469" width_o="1142" height_o="800" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/106153/1449183/kids and food_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/106153/1449183/Pets.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="455" width_o="1177" height_o="800" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/106153/1449183/Pets_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/106153/1449183/reasonable footwear.jpg" border="0" width="598" height="400" width_o="598" height_o="400" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/106153/1449183/reasonable footwear_o.jpg" align="left" />

Because I have eliminated much from the original application, which includes work history, moral character and family information, I’ve adjusted similar questions and added them to the interview, which is normally entails civics.
----
By using this extreme gesture I’m not condoning the super speedy process but I am making light of a complex situation to draw attention to an issue that can no longer wait and try to find relief in humor.

In Stitches: Smile Now, Cry Later is Smile Now, Cry Later was collaborative work between Ray Arroyo, Vanessa Sanchez and myself.

It began with the purpose of exploring the pros and cons of being in a gang through role play. It's been called many times before, "Enough is enough! Not one more child lost to gangs!", yet every year families and friends are out on the streets demanding an end to senseless killings. Regardless, innocent lives continue to be taken by bad aim, while others are herded into gang life.

What draws some youth into the gang lifestyle? While we don’t assume to hold the answer to such a complex question, we do have our shameless paraphernalia and documentation of our lives as gang members collected here.

Using ‘child’s play’ as means to explore the roles of gang members with funny costumes and toy weaponry, we have found our behavior and emotions to resemble what is actually played out in the street minus the blood shed of course; Aggression, competition, and along with fun and comfort within our groups, We got the sense that being in a gang chains you to a roller coaster of emotions.

Each artist has created their own gang, responsible for their own recruitment, attitude and aesthetic. We’ve created Facebook pages for each gang to build steam, throw jeers and jabs; Los Gallos, Taco Nasty Dynasty, & Sabinas Salvajes series verbal threats culminated in a public intervention (in April). The event was video taped (edited) by Gabriel Perez Diaz.

I was interested in rubbing a few years back when I thought of making a documentation of some local gang graffiti in a friend's hallway. In a very cut and dry manner I wanted to capture a piece of this brutish underground culture, using a technique generally reserved for ancient artifacts and head stones.; I thought it would be an interesting way to look at our immediate surroundings as history or future history but, then I had a sudden impulse. Making a connection with the carving, it's texture and the energy that went into making it, I began to enhance the simple rubbing with my own designs and a variety of colors.

Here is a sample of the stop motion animation stills in the flip book arranged in chronological order.

*Flip book
---
Some time ago I signed a few online petitions and made a few donations to worthy causes and organizations. Now, despite my efforts to avoid further mailings, I am sent a steady stream. Most everyday there are new additions to a pile of mail that I toss on the edge of bed to get sorted..eventually, some day.

I spend much of my time at work and at my studio. Despite my *ehem efforts to stay organized, things tended to collect and build up. I began to feed it and it grew and grew. The series of photographs in this flip book document it's emergence.
